Who was St Valentine and why do we celebrate our love for our other halves on the 14th of February and buy an abundance of cards and flowers?

Valentine Rose

There is not much definitive information surrounding this mysterious saint and the reasons why February 14th is the day of love.  However, it is certain that it's a christian festival with its origins in Rome but other than that the rest is pretty sketchy.  Some sources say that St Valentine helped to marry young Christian couples in the 3rd century who were being persecuted by Claudius in Rome at the time, some say he was beheaded on the 14th of February and others say he was a priest or a former bishop of Rome who freed christian inmates and healed others.  Needless to say there is much legend and myth surrounding this man.

Regardless, the day didn't really start to get recognition as the 'day of love' until the 19th century and we have been relishing red and pinks hearts ever since.
