The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar - Door Number 23
Each day in December until Christmas Day we are opening a door on The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar and posting our tasting notes on our blog.
Just three whiskies left to go now. Where has December gone? Our old friends AD Rattray are back with another one of those cask-strength sherry butts. 1988 Bunnahabhain 27yo is today's treat. It's at 55.4%.
On the nose it's pure sherry cask stuff: big, plummy, jammy fruits; there's dark sugars and polished wood; a hint of leather.
On the palate it's rich and sweet, with treacle, sultanas and muscovado sugar. There's a nice amount of sherry-soaked wood in there with black grape skin and cinnamon.
The finish is long and not as sweet as the palate, with prune juice, wood and salted caramel.
With water the nose becomes more grape-influenced, the palate also loses some of the sweetness and becomes a touch more winey and the finish actually loses a bit of the wine and is more sweet and woody. It's like one of those chocolates with the sherry inside them that you get around this time of year.
Just delicious! This is a definite Christmas whisky. Lovely stuff.
