The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar - Door Number 21
Each day in December until Christmas Day we are opening a door on The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar and posting our tasting notes on our blog.
Only 5 more doors left to open! We're back to AD Rattray for day 21. This time we've got a 1992 Glentauchers 22yo at 48.7% from a bourbon hogshead.
On the nose it's fragrant and fresh, despite its years. There's vanilla, sandalwood, lemongrass, a hint of salty, sea air, a little bit of pine and a mineral note. I'm thinking oysters but not as fishy. It's all conjuring up one of those pictures on a can of air fresheners with the blue sky, hills and meadows, somehow. Bright and breezy.
On the palate it's creamy fudge and candied orange. Very different to the nose but equally as light and fresh. There's not as much prickle or punch as the usual from AD Rattray which tend to be a good bit higher in alcohol than this one. It's malty and has subtle hints of wood. A little bit of lemon comes through.
The finish is medium but crisp. There's a delicate sweetness that gently fades out until a slight sour note appears just to balance it out.
With water the nose becomes more cereals and grist. The palate takes on more of the lemon and the finish does too, with less of the sour note at the end. Very creamy and sweet and light throughout.
A tasty, light dram that would be perfect for spring or even summer. Or an ideal start to a tasting of several whiskies.
