Each day in December until Christmas Day we are opening a door on The Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar and posting our tasting notes on our blog.
AD Rattray again, today, for day 18. That can only mean another tasty singlemalt straight out of the barrel with no messing about! It's a 1993 Auchroisk 22yo at 52.6% from a bourbon hogshead. Let's get on with it!
On the nose there's vanilla, grass, marzipan, muscovado sugar, candied ginger and a hint of cinnamon.
On the palate it's rich and sweet. Notes of orange oil, toffee, brandy snaps, vanilla fudge.
The finish is very long, with plenty of rich sugars, dark chocolate, ginger biscuits, cinnamon and a touch of hairspray.
With water the nose becomes floral and fragrant, a hint of lavender and summer meadows. The palate becomes vanilla ice cream and the finish has more wood apparent, almost becoming drier.
Well, this is a finely-balanced, mature whisky with plenty of complexity and depth.
